HomeworkEach evening Monday through Thursday students will have about 15-20 minutes of homework. You will find math fact fluency practice (see front page for which section) and reading fluency homework (Sight Words/Phrases/or Passages-due on Fridays) in the center of your child's homework folder. On rare occasions, math homework that is not completed in class will be sent in the "Bring Back to School" section of the homework folder. Please help your child clean out the papers in the "Leave at Home" section. Students who don't return homework will complete it during a portion of their recess time.
Students are encouraged to practice spelling and reading the 5 weekly sight words and memorize math facts using the websites provided (check out the math website tab), apps, rings, flash cards, or wipe-off rocket math sheets inside the center of the homework folder. Encourage your child to read 10 minutes each evening. This could include the basal reading stories, passages sent home, or books of their choice. Here's a review of nightly homework:

AbsensesBe sure to call the school when your child is absent. Although much of our work is done orally or involves hands on activities, I'd be glad to send any paper/pencil tasks home with a family member or neighbor. Just leave the name of the family member or neighbor and clasroom teacher when you contact the secretary. Please complete and return missed work as soon as possible.

Birthday TreatsAs we continue our efforts towards being a healthier and an “Allergy Free School”, and out of respect and concern for all students, we no longer allow food items to be brought to school for the purposes of sharing with the class. We would encourage optional items for sharing, that are NOT food related such as a pencil, dry erase marker, sidewalk chalk, glow stick, etc.

Scholastic Book OrdersI will send home scholastic book order forms monthly. If you choose to order please mark the order form, and send a check (made out to Scholastic) back to school in an envelope labeled with your child's name and Scholastic Book Order. I use bonus points earned from student purchases to buy books for the classroom library.

Conscious Discipline
Our D.T. school family and classrooms are using an approach called Conscious Discipline. Conscious Discipline integrates social-emotional learning, discipline, and self-regulation to teach vital life skills and character development. There are lots of helpful suggestions for parents, too, at conscious discipline.com Students and faculty make connections as we gather and sing family songs in the gym at 7:45... parents are welcome to join us! This continues as we greet one another in the classroom with special handshakes/music/chants, practice routines, take brain breaks where we connect with one another through song/exercise/poetry/finger plays/etc. Students learn about responsibility as they work together to complete classroom jobs, how to treat others with kindness as we add hearts to our school and classroom kindness trees, and build self-confidence as we highlight ways that we've kept our school safe and demonstrated kindness. Rather than having a "clip chart" where students clip up and down, we set goals each morning for ways that we want to grow and improve in our character, practice problem solving when disagreements arise, give students time to talk through their feelings, express feelings to others, and problem solve when logical consequences occur that are disappointing to them (for example friends choosing not to play with them when they have said something hurtful), allow students the opportunity to visit "the safe place" when they need some down time, and when necessary practice daily routines.
